Dear Open Foris Team, I'm writing to address a mobile GPS issue with Open Foris Arena Mobile. We have encountered difficulties in obtaining precise location data, with our GPS accuracy ranging from 20 to 100 meters. Achieving 10-meter accuracy is time-consuming and significantly impacts our crew's time and drains the device's battery. Our expectations are typically below 5 meters of accuracy, with updates ideally occurring every 5 to 10 seconds, as commonly observed in popular applications, including SteRiƧcio's Arena Mobile Experiments (Early Access) available on the Play Store. To address this concern, I conducted a comparison between the official and unofficial applications, and the unofficial application appears to be performing normally. This determination is based on factors such as data capture speed (less than 5 to 10 seconds), battery consumption rate, and accuracy (less than 5 meters). This comparison was prompted by complaints from our field crews. Using alternative devices for surveying is not a viable solution, so I kindly request that you update Open Foris Arena Mobile to align with the functionality of other applications. For your reference, here is a link to a YouTube video illustrating this issue: https://youtu.be/AZXTfgQCOjY?si=n1oZ2v5-TdP2-yV9. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely, Rajkumar Rimal asked 24 Oct '23, 06:07 Rajkumar |
Hi @joseph & @Rajkumar, are you or your colleagues still facing this issue? ( or the latest version >= 1.0.31 works for you?) Best, answered 07 Nov '23, 10:49 Ramiro (OF) |
Thanks, Rajkumar, we will take a look. Best, answered 24 Oct '23, 08:51 Ramiro (OF) |
Hi Rajkumar, could you check the version 1.0.28. Thanks. answered 30 Oct '23, 11:50 Ramiro (OF) |
Tried it also from a patio-rooftop here: besides the low accuracy in the official app, the location was even far beyond: like 50 m south. I am used to reach with my smartphone usually an accuracy of 3.216 m: and a right location within that circle! answered 30 Oct '23, 18:08 joseph |
Hi Joseph, Did you take that accuracy (3.216m) with some previous version? In order to investigate could you share your: Device: Current App version: Screenshot/Video - using Google Maps and the app Thanks answered 30 Oct '23, 22:47 Ramiro (OF) |
I take GPS locations in vegetation, flora and fauna surveys in the Netherlands with various apps: Turboveg (Synbiosys), Obsmapp (Observation.org), Qfield(QGIS). In QField you can give a treshhold value (also in AM Experiments) and averaging - recommended! In the open field I reach with my One+ smartphone mostly a horizontal precision within 4 meters and values of 3.216, 6,432, xx,xx, xxx,x. At home, just now, i get also just little accuracy of around 10 - 20m accuracy. The vertical accuracy, important for terrain height, is generally quite low with my One+ smartphone (50m); the iPhone used by some colleagues seems better (10m in open field). answered 31 Oct '23, 15:11 joseph |
Dear OFT, I just checked the last version. In the first attempt I got 15 m error. I will check it again in a different region (forests) without WI-FI and data. I will post the result with screen shots. Thank you. answered 01 Nov '23, 04:55 Rajkumar |
Thanks for your answer Joseph and for the references. Did you have the opportunity to check the GPS in Arena Mobile using a version greater or equal to 1.0.28? ( you can check the version at the end of the settings screen) Best, Rajkumar, let us know the values on the field, :) answered 02 Nov '23, 10:40 Ramiro (OF) |
I measured better results now - even better than 4m (3v3n 3.216!) accuracy - suggestion: but why not improve color range: e.g. green: better than 5, yellow: 5-10, orange : less than 20m red: from 20 and above not very useful GPS recording anyway. Thanks, Joseph answered 16 Nov '23, 23:50 joseph |
