This is my first time using CEO, and I would like to collect burned area data for fire mapping.

I am focusing on June 2019 over a large study area (~400,000 km²). Based on my image collection from Google Earth Engine, there are about 600 Sentinel-2 images covering the area during that month.

When users map burned areas, I would like them to know which Sentinel-2 image they are viewing (e.g., acquisition date and scene) so they can identify burned scars more accurately.

Currently, I understand that CEO provides a Sentinel-2 background map with different band compositions, and users can assign year and month, but they cannot see the specific image date or scene ID.

My questions are:

  1. When creating a project in CEO, is it possible to display the Sentinel-2 image metadata (e.g., date or scene) to users?
  2. Do I need to export each image from Google Earth Engine and upload it as project imagery to control which images are shown? or should I use GeoDash to display images from different dates? Which widget should I choose then?

I plan to use a 10km grid plot and maybe 9 samples in each plot, but users can also draw burned scar they see on each plot. Since this is my first time creating a CEO project, I am still learning how the system works. Any suggestions or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello,

This sounds like an interesting project!

  1. There is not a built-in functionality for this in CEO. If you were using Landsat, you could use the Degradation widget in the GeoDash to see individual images identification and acquisition date, but this tool only works with Landsat, not Sentinel-2.
  2. To display only individual images from Sentinel-2, you could define individual images from GEE in your institution and display those. A faster method would be to use the Pre-loaded Image Collections widget in the GeoDash, setting the time range to a very short window. However, this displays NDVI or similar spectral indexes, rather than an RGB image.

I hope this helps. You may already be aware, but CEO has tons of documentation that can also be a great reference: https://collect-earth-online-doc.readthedocs.io/en/latest/

Please let us know if you have further questions!
